Services Provided by Amtrak at BFD Station
BFD is the best-equipped station in this group. Amtrak lists a staffed ticket window, checked baggage with storage, bag storage for a fee, baggage carts and bike boxes, and shipping boxes for sale; Amtrak Express shipping is not available. The building holds an enclosed staffed waiting room, accessible restrooms, an ATM, payphones, vending machines, a Greyhound booth and an elevator, but no Wi-Fi and no lounge. Accessibility covers the platform, ticket office, waiting room, restrooms and water fountain, and both a wheelchair and a wheelchair lift are kept on site, although there is no high platform. Boarding gates close five minutes before departure, and passengers checking baggage are asked to arrive 45 minutes early. Unaccompanied child travel is permitted.

Bakersfield Amtrak Station Layout Map
The station is laid out around three tracks. Two passenger platforms, one side and one island, each hold a six-car train, while the third track is used for overnight storage and carries no passengers; one platform has a long canopy. The 8,300-square-foot building opened on 4 July 2000, replacing a small prefabricated depot of 1974 about a mile to the west. The State funded the $5.1 million project, which the City of Bakersfield led and which also involved piping part of an irrigation canal underground and building an underpass beneath the BNSF tracks. Rossetti Associates Architects designed the glass-walled, red sandstone-clad building, and the scheme won the American Public Works Association’s Public Works Project of the Year award. The map below shows the site.

Baggage & Luggage Rules
Checked baggage is accepted at Bakersfield from 04:40 A.M. to 08:30 P.M., and checked baggage storage is also available, which is rare among the stations in this group. Bag storage can be arranged for a fee, baggage carts are provided, and bike boxes and shipping boxes are sold on site. Amtrak Express shipping is not offered at BFD. Because the station is the southern end of the line and the main transfer point to buses for Los Angeles, baggage handling here carries more traffic than at intermediate stops.
Food, Lounges & Restrooms
Vending machines, an ATM and an accessible water fountain are available inside, and the staffed waiting room provides seating from 03:45 A.M. to 09:00 P.M. Accessible restrooms are provided. There is no Amtrak lounge at Bakersfield, and no full restaurant inside the building, so passengers wanting a meal use the eating places of downtown Bakersfield around Truxtun Avenue. Because the earliest trains leave before 5 A.M., the long waiting room hours matter more here than at most stations.
How to Reach Bakersfield Amtrak Station
Truxtun Avenue runs through downtown Bakersfield, close to State Route 178 and a short drive from State Route 99. The station is built as an interchange: Amtrak Thruway motorcoaches depart from bays immediately outside for Los Angeles and other destinations in Southern California and Nevada, forming the main connection for passengers continuing south, since no passenger train crosses the Tehachapi mountains. Greyhound Lines uses bays to the west of the Thruway stands, and Kern Transit and Golden Empire Transit also serve the station. Taxi ranks lie to the west, a passenger drop-off zone sits north of the building, bike racks are provided, and the parking lot is free and unattended.
Nearby Airports
Meadows Field Airport (BFL) is the nearest airport with scheduled passenger flights, about 5 miles north of the station. It offers a modest number of commercial departures, so travelers needing a wider choice of flights generally use the Amtrak Thruway coach connection to Los Angeles instead. The airport is reached from the station by road, as no rail link serves the terminal.
Hotels Near Bakersfield Amtrak Station
Amtrak lists no affiliated hotel at Bakersfield, and the station provides no overnight accommodation. Because the first departures leave in the small hours, passengers often stay nearby the night before, but any booking has to be made independently, and rates and availability confirmed directly with providers in Bakersfield.
Bakersfield is the busiest station in this group and the most completely equipped: staffed from before 5 A.M., with checked baggage, an elevator, accessible restrooms and a large bus interchange that carries Gold Runner passengers on to Los Angeles. The 2000 building replaced a prefabricated depot and won a national public works award. The map above shows its position on Truxtun Avenue.
