A $3.2 million improvement project, begun in January 2020 and completed in April 2023, brought the station into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Amtrak carried out the work with the City of Gastonia, the North Carolina Department of Transportation and Norfolk Southern, which owns the building, the parking lot, the platform and the track. The project delivered a new concrete platform with lighting, guardrails and signage, a renovated waiting room and accessible restroom, a replaced heating and cooling system, a paved lot with two accessible spaces, three ramps with railings and a new entrance with a power-operated door.
